Ottawa, August 4, 2026, The Association of Justice Counsel (AJC), representing more than 3,500 federal lawyers and prosecutors, notaries, and articling students, continues to take action to ensure members are safe at work through health and safety committees, formal complaints, and ongoing advocacy.
When you encounter a health and safety issue – whether a security or structural concern, evidence of mould or poor air quality, or signs of a rodent or bug infestation – report the issue to your manager immediately and let your union representatives know.
Your union can provide advice on your rights and next steps, including whether a grievance for further complaint is appropriate.
Your union is making it easier to advocate for your health and safety at work. If you experience a health and safety issue in your workplace, simply use this template. Be sure to fill out the details and include any supporting documentation, including photos.

Dear Manager,
I am writing to formally report a health and safety concern that occurred on [DATE] at [ADDRESS, INCLUDING FLOOR AND OTHER SPECIFICS], pursuant to Part II of the Canada Labour Code.
[PROVIDE A CLEAR AND DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF WHAT HAPPENED AND/OR WHAT THE ISSUE IS, INCLUDING WHERE AND WHEN IT OCCURRED, AND ANY POTENTIAL IMPACTS TO YOUR HEALTH AND SAFETY.]
To address this matter and ensure a health and safe working environment, I request the following actions be implemented immediately:
[LIST YOUR REQUEST, WHICH MAY INCLUDE temporary approval to work from home until the issue is resolved; relocation to an alternate workspace; provision of information, documentation, inspection results]
I appreciate confirmation of the steps the Employer intends to take to investigate and resolve this issue, as well as measures that will be implemented to prevent recurrence.
