A message from Gregory Harlow, President of the Association of Justice Counsel

The Association of Justice Counsel, representing more than 3,500 federal Crown counsel, notaries and articling students, will enter October’s negotiations with bargaining priorities now approved by its Governing Council in August.

Those priorities draw on direct conversations with hundreds of members across 15 virtual and in-person outreach sessions with the President and local Governing Council directors. The Negotiations Committee considered that feedback alongside the bargaining priorities survey results and individual input received over the past several years to develop its recommendations to the Governing Council.

I thank every member who participated in these outreach sessions, including our two summer bargaining town halls and the discussion focused on equity, diversity and inclusion. Your contributions brought the realities of your lived experiences and your workplaces directly into our preparations. Those experiences matter as we press for improvements that make a difference in members’ working lives.

The approved priorities put members’ expectations firmly at the centre of our mandate. Federal legal professionals expect fair compensation and meaningful improvements to their working conditions. The employer must come prepared to engage seriously with those expectations.

The government relies on our members’ expertise to carry out its responsibilities to Canadians. Recognizing that contribution requires concrete commitments at the bargaining table.

With bargaining approaching, the Negotiations Committee is turning the approved priorities into specific proposals for our first bargaining sessions on October 14 and 15. Members can make their support visible through the #TogetherInBargaining toolkit. Displaying a workplace poster or using a meeting background reinforces the collective strength behind our proposals.

Our union has a clear mandate. We expect the employer to meet us at the table ready to make progress.
